In this clip, it shows "Frank Bailey" assaulting a cameraman in the streets of Philadelphia, MS. This truthfully depicts how the media were treated while covering the case. This actual event occurred in 1966 after Alton Wayne Roberts' trial.
As shown below, nearly 400 members of the Navy were sent to Neshoba County to further the search for the missing bodies. This shows the amount of effort that was put in by the FBI to find the missing civil rights workers. They did not find the bodies which led to further investigation.
This event was shown extremely accurately. The first of the movie shows a burning church, but until this scene, we do not know why it is relevant. Our research found that the Klan set fire to the church as their first assassination attempt of Michael Schwerner. The Klan was outraged that he was not there which led to the beatings of multiple black church goers, and the burning of the Mount Zion Church. This scene is an actual representation of what happened the night of the failed assassination attempt and burning of the church.
This scene shows the FBI trekking through a muddy swamp, led by a local Native American. Here is where they found the car of the three missing activists. This is also where the Navy comes to search for the missing bodies. In actuality, research found that many FBI agents did walk through the swamp, suit jackets and all. The Choctaw Indian Reservation were the ones that reported the car fire. This was the first promising lead the FBI had in the disappearance of the boys.
Here it shows the discovery of the bodies. The scene is depicted very closely to what actually happened in reality. The bodies were found on August 4, 1964 buried in a dam at Old Jolley Farm. The land owner, Olden Burrage, said, "Hell, I've got a dam that'll hold a hundred of them." He says "them" in reference to the many other civil rights activists.
